Glendale, approximately 9 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. William John Murphy was the founder of Glendale. A story goes that before WWI, ostrich feathers were a big business in Glendale. Now a developed city, Glendale still has several buildings in Historical Glendale that are registered with the National Register of Historic Places or Glendale Arizona Historical Society-listed including the historic William John Murphy House, built in 1895. Also built in 1895, the Humphrey and Davidson building and the Santa Fe Railroad Depot. Others built in the early 1900s are the Beet Sugar Factory and the Sine Brothers Hardware Store. The Historic Sahuaro Ranch, built in 1885, is a 17 acre property with 17 ranch buildings. Many special events are held at the ranch.

Now a modern city with historic properties, The city’s population (2012) is 232,143. The median household income is $48,079.
