Glendale, approximately 9 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona.  William John Murphy was the founder of Glendale. A story goes that before WWI, ostrich feathers were a big business in Glendale.  The Glendale-grown alfalfa diet provided the ostriches with feathers having a unique luster not found anywhere else in the world.  Now a developed city, Glendale still has several buildings in Historical Glendale that are registered with the National Register of Historic Places or Glendale Arizona Historical Society-listed including the historic William John Murphy House, built in 1895. Also built in 1895, the Humphrey and Davidson building and the Santa Fe Railroad Depot.  Others built in the early 1900s are the Beet Sugar Factory and the Sine Brothers Hardware Store. The Historic Sahuaro Ranch, built in 1885, is a 17 acre property with 17 ranch buildings. Many special events are held at the ranch.

Now a modern city with historic properties, The city’s population (2012) is 232,143.  The median household income is $48,079. Residents of Glendale are 52.7% white, 37 % hispanic, 3.5% black and 6.7% other. The most common industry is construction, and the most common occupations are protective service workers and information and record clerks.

Glendale has 3 unified school districts, 3 high school districts, and 4 elementary schools. There are several higher educational opportunities in the city.  Glendale Community College and Glendale Community College North are members of the Maricopa County Community College District. A graduate college of medicine,  Midwestern University, is located Glendale as well as Thunderbird School of Global Management, a graduate school specializing in international management.

Per articles in USA Today and Sunset magazine, Glendale considers itself “Arizona’s Antique Capital.” Historic Downtown Glendale is actually two neighborhoods: Historic Catlin Court, and Old Towne. Each neighborhood being distinctively different, but both are filled with specialty shops and famous antique stores and eateries.  Haus Murphy’s, for example, was featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

Glendale is the site of two major sports venues: University of Phoenix Stadium, and Jobing.com Arena. The Arizona Cardinal NFL stadium in Glendale is the first in North America to combine a retractable roof and a mobile grass playing field.  The natural grass field lies on top of a 234 x 400 ft. movable tray that sits outside to get sunlight and rain, and on game days, the tray moves into the stadium.  It takes about 45 minutes for the grass to come inside.  The stadium was featured on the History Channel series Modern Marvels for its roll-out natural grass field.  University of Phoenix Stadium hosted Super Bowl XLII and will host the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX. The stadium in Glendale also hosts other football games and events such as the annual  Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Adjacent to the University of Phoenix Stadium is Jobing.com Arena. The arena is home of the Phoenix Coyotes (NHL) and location of an annual Street League Skateboarding event as well as many concerts and shows. Also next to the arena and stadium is the Westgaqte City Center: an entertainment district to shop, dine, and experience nightlife and entertainment events.
The City of Glendale owns and operates the Camelback Ranch-Glendale spring training complex and stadium in Phoenix, where the major-league baseball teams LA Dodgers and Chicago White Sox share a training camp.

Some of Glendale’s notable attractions include: Deer Valley Rock Art Center, Brand Park, Cerreta Candy Company, a family-owned hometown candy factory (tour), Glendale Xeriscape Botanical Garden, which has over 1000 varieties of desert plants, Thunderbird Park the only mountain preserve in Glendale with approximately 1000 acres of desert preserve and trails. Also, Glendale is known for the chocolate festival each February called the Glendale Chocolate Affaire, and in December, the city celebrates the holidays with a two-month huge holiday lights display and special events.
